Masks Save Lives – Covid-19

ML wearing mask made from sleeve of T-shirt. Glasses protect eyes.

Friends, my efforts to persuade my publishers to provide my books free for the duration of this pandemic have so far been unsuccessful. I find this disappointing. Until I figure out something else, I’ll continue to post excerpts that could prove helpful.

Here’s an excerpt from: Essential Survival Gear: a simple HANDKERCHIEF/BANDANA/SCARF could save lives, especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic:

Other First Layer Tools

In addition to a knife and igniters, it’s a good idea to always have on your person a few other tools. I routinely carry my passport, other documentation, and cash, in a case that can be worn on a cord around the neck, or attached to the belt to be worn inside the trousers. I also carry a separate wallet with more cash, driver’s license, credit cards, a credit card sized address book, business cards, and a pen. On my key ring are two tiny Photon pinch lights – one of which is red, which saves night vision and can be seen for about a mile, and has a strobe feature, and a button compass which shows the cardinal directions and is sufficiently accurate for general direction finding if not for precision map work. Also on my key ring is a flash card containing my current work and digital images of our passports and other documentation, and a P38 can opener – a relic of my military service. In my pockets are one or two large handkerchiefs/bandanas – which have many uses, including: sunshade, towel, compression bandage, water filter, hot pad, and most important A MASK – LIKE THE ONES WORN BY COWBOYS – WHICH CAN PROTECT YOU FROM CERTAIN DISEASES, sandstorms and wind-blown debris.

I will continue to try and persuade my publisher, and my agent, but so far I have had no response to my request to give this book (and others) away free during this time. Either buy the book and read it, it could save your life, or watch my posts and website for no charge.

MORE INFORMATION ON MASKS:

Based on much experience in Asia and basic military medical training, I’ve been saying what this article says for weeks. Few believed me. Sometimes I just get tired. Use a bandana (like I always carry) or a scarf, or a neck gaiter, or make a mask from a couple layers of a T-shirt or other thin fabric, or SOMETHING.

This is only “NEW” in the US. It’s well understood in Asia and a key part of their success in stopping or slowing Covid-19. Been sayin…

Thanks for the sound advice James; I used my bandana today when I went to the local shop.

Apparent good news from Seattle: they seem to be successfully squelching the virus, through quarantine and social distancing.
The R0 (rate by which it’s spreading) has dropped from 2.7 to 1.4, and continues to fall.

Once it gets below 1.0, the virus is no longer spreading; and the direst predictions— that eventually it will spread everywhere— are likely to be wrong. Let’s hope so!
